Last Week in Congress
By James Wilson
There was some good news and some bad news at the start of the 110th Congress last week. On the plus side, the Senate met on Thursday to organize and then took Friday off, so they haven’t yet inflicted any damage. Also, the only measure the House passed was a resolution governing the ethics of House members. The 38 page H. Res. 6 prohibits members from accepting gifts from lobbyists and places restrictions on free travel and other perks lobbyists provide. In principle, we applaud such reforms. Ethics rules recognize that responsibility for corruption lies with members of Congress themselves, not in the lobbyists and citizen groups who try to influence them. Of all the items in Speaker Pelosi’s 100-Hour Agenda, this was by far the most laudable. So what’s the bad news? In the Senate, 174 bills were introduced, and in the House, 311. Obviously, they weren’t read to members of the House. One wonders how many will ever be read. It looks like DownsizeDC.org can look forward to a busy year. DownsizeDC.org publishes this feature on weeks when Congress is in session. To see how your represenatives voted on particular bills, or to read the bills themselves, go here for the House and here for the Senate.
