Success!!!
By Perry Willis
Today's Downsizer-Dispatch . . . It's working!!! DC Downsizers, 2007 is off to a tremendous start. In fact, I have the pleasure of announcing our first success, and the year is only five days old. I'll also let you know how you can tune in to two interviews I'm doing today where I'll present even MORE GOOD NEWS. But first, AGGRESSIVE ACTION is paying off. Here's how . . . As a result of intense pressure Speaker Pelosi's people have now assured reporters from more than one publication that they will NOT be pursuing grassroots lobbying regulations as part of their first 100 hour agenda. And it gets better. According to two respected Capitol Hill publications, the Speaker's office has made it clear that they will send the bill through the normal committee process! That means a battle that could've been over in a hurry, before we could further organize, has been stalled for perhaps weeks, and maybe even months. Like our battle, late last year, to fight the warrantless surveillance of American citizen's international phone calls and emails, the longer this goes, the better our odds for defeating it all-together. We beat our opposition then and now I'm beginning to believe we can to it again. So I hope you're cheering, because we're so charged-up we can hardly stand it. How did this happen? Well, Downsize DC has been working on multiple fronts. One effective move was our involvement in the Free Speech Coalition. As we reported back in December, we signed a letter with 46 other organizations that was sent to "Public Citizen," the authors of the grassroots regulations in Speaker Pelosi's bill. This letter started the ball rolling. The Free Speech Coalition didn't stop there. We publicized the letter with a press release, and began activating the media and the blogs. Before long, those efforts bubbled up to mainstream publications. Meanwhile, some of the other signers to that letter, now aware of the threat, took some initiative too. And at the same time, while everyone else in the country was focused on Gerald Ford or just recovering from holiday malaise and hang-overs, Downsize DC got aggressive. Capitol Hill was so quiet you could hear crickets chirp, but members of Congress were hearing from you! They probably thought we were all crazy, because we were hitting them so hard at a time when they expected things to be quiet. But that's the way we like it! Downsize DC was the first grassroots organization in the country to put citizens in direct contact with Congress on this issue! And the Speaker changed her plans. But there's still more work to do. And more good news may be coming soon. As I said, the longer we can prolong this, the more the Democrat's honeymoon dwindles. In fact, I had concrete hopes that I'd have more exciting news to report this morning, but I can't quite yet. Nothing's guaranteed, but I hope to have some good news on our efforts to secure some big support on this issue from the "liberal" side of things very soon. Our efforts have been made possible by your support. I feel justified in saying that our role in this battle has been central. I thank those of you who have supported us. But this year is about AGGRESSIVE ACTION and this battle has just begun. Yes, we've driven the enemy back, but they're regrouping. We're outgunned and you know it. We need all the firepower we can get. The solution is simple. Give us your financial support. I'm proud to say I know of no other organization that does so much with so little. But enough of doing it with little: It's time to do it with a lot more. DOWNSIZE DC IS WORKING. We're earning your support. That's why I'm looking for at least one donor who can give us $10,000 right now and others who will give us $1,000. This battle is that important. For those who can't make such a contribution, we've made it very, very easy for you to make a big impact as well. Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, PayPal, or a check by old-fashioned mail. You can make a generous one-time contribution to help us with this month's budget, or you can make a monthly credit card pledge of $3, $5, $8, $10, $15, $25, $35, $50, or more! You can make your donation here. BUT THE GOOD NEWS DOESN'T STOP THERE. My email box is filling with media requests. Yes, Downsize DC is becoming popular. And so, I have two interviews this afternoon (FRI, 1/5) and more coming soon. Accent Radio Network host Jerry Hughes welcomes me back for our regular Friday feature. Please support this show. Tune in to Portsmouth Community Radio on 106.1 FM or streaming audio outside the Portsmouth area at www.LeftRightAndCorrect.com. BUT IS THAT ALL THE GOOD NEWS FOR THIS NEW YEAR? No. Because perhaps in this year of AGGRESSIVE ACTION we have the ability to create our own good news. The Democrats have expressed an interest in undoing some of the more heinous acts passed while Congress was under Republican control. For example . . . The federal government now has the power to make you disappear. It can detain you and torture you without trial. Forever. You may have heard that this power only applies to non-citizens (as if that makes it okay). If so, you heard wrong. This law removes your right to challenge your detention in court, and if you cannot challenge your detention in court, then you cannot use your U.S. citizenship as grounds to end your detention. This law needs to be repealed immediately. "Truth must count. Innocence must matter." You can begin the repeal process now by sending a message to Congress HERE. Please do it. Let's be aggressive. And please don't forget to make your contribution HERE. Thanks for taking AGGRESSIVE ACTION. Thank you for being a DC Downsizer, Jim Babka President DownsizeDC.org, Inc.
